How to write a song with the composer

  1. Set the basics: clef, key, time signature and tempo.
  2. Write the melody: tap the staff, use the mini piano or type A–G on your keyboard. Pick the duration first (1–5), add dots, rests, sharps, flats and ties.
  3. Add lyrics: select a note and type its syllable; Enter jumps to the next note.
  4. Check the chords: chord symbols appear automatically for every bar (or half bar). Tap one to choose another chord.
  5. Play and practice: press Play to hear the melody with strumming; turn on the metronome, a count-in and loop.
  6. Save and download: keep several songs in your browser and export PDF, PNG, SVG, MusicXML, MIDI, WAV or the project file.

How the automatic chords work

For each bar the composer weighs the notes by duration, gives extra weight to the first beat and to notes of the key, and compares them with major, minor, seventh, suspended, diminished and augmented chords. The best fit becomes the chord symbol. It's a starting point: melodies can be harmonized in many ways, so try alternatives by tapping the symbol.

Files you can download

PDF for printing, MusicXML to keep editing in MuseScore, Finale, Sibelius or Dorico, MIDI with separate melody and accompaniment tracks for any DAW, WAV audio rendered in your browser, and the JSON project to reopen your song here. Everything is created on your device; nothing is uploaded.
