How to tune a guitar in Drop D

Drop D lowers only the 6th string from E to D (D–A–D–G–B–E). You get a deeper bass and one-finger power chords on the three lowest strings, used everywhere from rock and metal to folk.

Step by step

  1. Allow microphone access when your browser asks (audio stays on your device).
  2. Play one note and let it ring. The tuner detects which string or note you are playing.
  3. Follow the needle: left means flat (tighten / raise), right means sharp (loosen / lower).
  4. When the note turns green you are within ±3 cents. Move on to the next one.

Pro tip

Check the low D against the open 4th string (also D): they should sound one octave apart with no beating.
